Mr. Markell had served as a United States Bankruptcy Judge (2004-2013), presiding over complex commercial restructurings, insolvency proceedings, and cross-border bankruptcy matters. He adjudicated and shaped precedent-setting decisions at the intersection of bankruptcy law, corporate governance, and financial distress, with deep exposure to real-world business failures and turnarounds; advised and influenced bankruptcy doctrine through extensive scholarship on insolvency, restructuring, and commercial law, widely cited by courts, practitioners, and policymakers; contributed to national and international insolvency policy discussions as a member of leading professional bodies, including the American Law Institute, National Bankruptcy Conference, and International Insolvency Institute; and bridged legal theory and practice through prior experience in private practice, including advising clients on complex business reorganizations and financial restructuring strategies.
